Riding the trail

The Western Ōkataina trail is an old forestry road that dates back to earlier last century when the area was logged for rimu, totara, rata & kahikatea. Starting from Millar Road, the trail features native bush and amazing views of Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti from Whakapounakau Trig at 758m. There’s an epic downhill from the Trig, where riders can pin it (while keeping an eye out for walkers), all the way to the Outdoor Education Centre.

Rotorua MTB Club trips:

Rotorua Mountain Bike Club sometimes organises club trips to ride Western Ōkataina, so keep an eye out for events which may pop up on the Facebook page.
