Whaka & Tokorangi Forest

Whakarewarewa and Titokorangi Forest

Rotorua’s forest is recognised world-wide for its incredible mountain biking trail network and dirt gold.

The best place to ride

Rotorua has the largest mountain bike trail network in Aotearoa with year-round access.

Featuring master crafted trails, well-draining volcanic soils, varying topography and incredible scenery across geothermal and lake landscapes.

With around 200km of continually evolving trails, there is something to cater for all levels of rider, from beginners and family groups through to intermediate and expert levels in a mix of native and exotic forest.

The trails are maintained by Rotorua Trails Trust, so if you enjoy your ride, please consider making a donation, so the trails can continue to be maintained and developed.

International Mountain biking Association (IMBA): Rotorua gold-level Ride Centre

In 2019, IMBA announced Rotorua had earned gold-level Ride Center status for four years, which is significant considering there are only six gold-level IMBA Ride Centers in the world.

In their review of Rotorua, IMBA said:

“Many of the trails that cover Whakarewarewa National Forest were built by mountain bikers and capture the riding experience mountain bikers crave, with twists and turns that are fun to ride at any speed. Rotorua offers rides for every level of mountain biker – from family fun to expert level – as well as details like excellent trail maps, central accommodation and a plethora of bike rental options.”

Dave Wiens, IMBA executive director said, “A gold-level IMBA Ride Center is the best of the best. Rotorua has what so many destinations aspire to have, and their commitment to mountain biking is evidenced in their status renewal. The trails and facilities for mountain bikers are world-class.”
